Biographical or Historical Note

In 2002, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston acquired nearly 4,000 photographs from German collector Manfred Heiting. In 2006, his papers were added to the museum archives, making available a record of the work of one of the world´s renowned collectors of photography.

Heiting, named one of America´s top 100 art collectors by Art & Antiques magazine in 2003, amassed over thirty years a comprehensive collection including the works of nearly every major photographer as well as a record of the development of the art of photography. Heiting worked for Polaroid (1965-1983) and American Express International Inc. (1984-1994), which afforded him access to the major photographers of the day. In 1983, he cofounded Fotografie Forum Frankfurt, which he ran until 1993. He was also cofounder of the Fotografie Museum Amsterdam/FOAM and served on the board of many nonprofits including the George Eastman House.
