Abstract:

Emma Richardson Cherry (Mrs. Dillon B. Cherry, 1859-1954), was an artist, instructor and arts advocate whose active career in Texas spanned the years 1900-1940. She was instrumental in the founding of the Houston Art League, predecessor to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in 1900. She exhibited at the museum over 30 times in solo and group shows during her extensive career. The Cherry Papers provide an overview of the career and civic interests of the artist. The papers consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, exhibition pamphlets, invitations and other printed matter, personal journal notes and one small canvas in oil.
